Cancer and Aging Research Group (CARG) Making Waves at the ASCO 2024 Annual Conference

The Cancer and Aging Research Group (CARG) made a significant impact at the recently concluded ASCO 2024 Annual Conference, “The Art and Science of Cancer Care: From Comfort to Cure”. CARG members received awards, connected at social events, and gave over a dozen presentations. With its unwavering dedication to advancing the understanding and treatment of cancer in older adults, CARG showcased groundbreaking research, fostered collaborations, and ignited discussions among experts in the field.

This article highlights the notable presence of CARG at the conference that took place from May 31 to June 4 in Chicago, IL, and the valuable insights it brought to the forefront.

Cancer care for older adults poses unique challenges that necessitate specialized attention. Recognizing this, CARG has emerged as a pioneering force in the field, designing and implementing clinical trials to improve the care of older adults with cancer. At the ASCO 2024 Annual Conference, CARG’s research and findings shed light on the intricacies of cancer care in the aging population. Below are a few other notable awards received by CARG members:

First awarded in 2007, this award and lectureship were created in the name of B.J. Kennedy, MD, a past president of ASCO, in honor of his outstanding contributions to the research, diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the elderly, and in recognition of his bringing an understanding of the field to the many fellows that he mentored. The Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO) distinction recognizes members for their extraordinary volunteer service, engagement, dedication, and commitment to ASCO. CARG’s presence at the conference was marked by an array of cutting-edge research presentations and poster sessions. Researchers from CARG shared their findings concerning the impact of aging on cancer biology, the efficacy of treatments in older patients, and the assessment of geriatric-specific factors in treatment decision-making. These studies not only expanded our knowledge but also paved the way for tailored interventions and improved outcomes in older adults with cancer.

More than 15 CARG members presented at the ASCO Annual Meeting, 4 members participated as an abstract discussant, 2 members chaired a session (clinical science symposium and ASCO/ECO Joint Education Session), and more than 30 members showcased their work through engaging and informative posters, covering topics ranging from “A Geriatrician’s Journey in the Cancer Care World” to “Patient-Centered Care for Older Adults with Cancer” to “Bioethics of over- and undertreatment in older adults with cancer.”

The ASCO Annual Conference serves as a platform for collaboration and networking among experts from various disciplines. CARG took advantage of this opportunity and hosted a CARG Poster Walk and a CARG Networking event, both of which provided some long overdue in-person opportunities for the community to enhance interdisciplinary research and clinical practice in the field of geriatric oncology.

In addition to its research contributions, CARG played a vital role in education and advocacy at the conference. Through specialized sessions and workshops, for example, the Community of Practice Session: Geriatric Oncology, CARG members shared expertise on geriatric oncology, highlighting the importance of comprehensive geriatric assessments, supportive care interventions, and shared decision-making in the management of cancer in older adults. By advocating for the inclusion of older patients in clinical trials and the development of age-appropriate treatment guidelines, CARG continues to shape the landscape of cancer care for older adults.
